What is Jakavi used for?
Jakavi (Ruxolitinib) is a prescription medicine used to treat bone marrow disorders such as myelofibrosis (MF) and polycythemia vera (PV). It is also used for the treatment of chronic graft-versus-host disease (GVHD).
Myelofibrosis is a serious hematologic disorder that disrupts blood cell production due to abnormal fibrosis (scar tissue formation) in the bone marrow. Polycythemia vera is a condition characterized by excessive production of red blood cells, which increases the risk of blood clot formation.
Jakavi belongs to the Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitor class and works by targeting JAK1 and JAK2 enzymes, helping to regulate abnormal cell production in the bone marrow. This reduces spleen enlargement, relieves symptoms, and improves the patient's quality of life. Jakavi is available as an oral tablet and should be taken as prescribed by a doctor.
