What is Piasky used for?
PIASKY (Crovalimab) is a prescription medicine used to treat paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH), a rare and life-threatening blood disorder. PNH leads to the abnormal breakdown of red blood cells (hemolysis), causing symptoms such as anemia, fatigue, blood clots, and kidney disease.
PIASKY belongs to a class of medicines known as complement C5 inhibitors. It works by targeting the complement system, a part of the body's immune system. By binding to the C5 protein, PIASKY blocks the final step of the complement cascade, preventing the destruction of red blood cells. This helps alleviate symptoms and improve the quality of life for patients.
Administration: The initial dose of PIASKY is given as an intravenous (IV) infusion. Subsequently, weekly subcutaneous injections are administered for the first 4 weeks, followed by maintenance doses every 4 weeks. After receiving proper training, patients may self-administer the medication at home.
Safety information: PIASKY may increase the risk of serious and life-threatening infections caused by Neisseria meningitidis. Therefore, it is essential to complete or update meningococcal vaccinations at least 2 weeks prior to starting treatment. Despite vaccination, patients should be closely monitored for signs of meningococcal infections.
