What is Olumiant used for?
Olumiant (baricitinib) is indicated for the treatment of patients with:
- Moderate to severe rheumatoid arthritis when standard treatment with disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (also known as ‘DMARDs’) has not worked well enough, or if patients cannot tolerate them. Olumiant can be used either alone or in combination with the disease-modifying drug, methotrexate.
- Moderate to severe atopic dermatitis in adult patients who are candidates for systemic therapy.
On November 19, 2020, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued an emergency use authorization (EUA) for Olumiant (baricitinib), in combination with Veklury (remdesivir), to treat COVID-19 patients.
EMA has started evaluating an application to extend the use of Olumiant (baricitinib) to include treatment of COVID-19 in hospitalized patients from 10 years of age who require supplemental oxygen.
