What is Afinitor used for?
Afinitor (everolimus) is an mTOR inhibitor indicated to treat:
- Hormone receptor-positive, HER2-negative advanced breast cancer that has started to spread, in postmenopausal women who have already received certain other medicines for their cancer, in combination with exemestane.
- Advanced renal cell carcinoma (a kidney cancer) when certain other medicines have not worked.
- Advanced pancreatic neuroendocrine tumours (NET) that have progressed and cannot be treated with surgery.
- Advanced gastrointestinal NET that has progressed and cannot be treated with surgery.
- Advanced lung NET that has progressed and cannot be treated with surgery.
- Renal (kidney) angiomyolipoma with a genetic condition called tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC), when their kidney tumor does not require immediate surgery.
- Subependymal giant cell astrocytoma (SEGA; a type of brain tumor) when the tumor cannot be completely removed by surgery.
- Adults and children 2 years of age with TSC, as an added treatment to other antiepileptic medicines.
It is available in tablet form, each containing either 2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg, or 10mg of everolimus.
